Renewable energy developments planned for Isle of Lewis

02 July 2008

Renewable energy developments planned for Isle of Lewis The refusal of plans for a 181-turbine windfarm on the Isle of Lewis does not signal the end for renewable energy developments in the area in the future, the Scottish government has said.

Lewis Wind Power's proposal for the windfarm – which was predicted to create over a thousand jobs in total – was declined due to its expected negative impact on the protected peatland area on the island.

However, energy minister Jim Mather has stated he will produce an action plan on sustainable energy development by the autumn to allow similar schemes to be brought forward without breaking legislation.

The local council has also defended any future plans. "The council will continue to engage in dialogue with the government and potential developers to look at options for developing the vast power resources on the islands," said vice-convener Angus Campbell.

Attractions on the Isle of Lewis include standing stones and the Lewis Chessmen and wildlife such as golden eagles and red deer. ADNFCR-1235-ID-18666555-ADNFCR
