'Gap is closing' between regular and green energy tariffs

The price gap between energy providers' online and green tariffs is closing, according to new research from Moneysupermarket.com.

The price comparison website reported major energy suppliers British Gas, ScottishPower, npower, E.ON and Scottish and Southern Power now offer environmentally-friendly energy tariffs an average of £97.73 more than their online tariffs.

Dedicated green energy companies are also supplying cheaper power, with Ecotricity's annual bill coming to an average of £966 when used with the cheapest green gas tariff available.

Of the larger companies, Scottish and Southern Energy can offer dual fuel green tariff of under £946 on average, around £50 more than its online tariff.

Moneysupermarket.com describes the figures as a "positive move".

"Green tariffs offer a great alternative for eco-friendly Brits and our research shows it doesn't cost over the odds to go green," said head of utilities Paul Schofield.

This June, environment secretary Hilary Benn said he wanted green energy suppliers to make the benefits of their services clear to consumers, potentially introducing a ratings system.
