First council-run windfarm planned for Glasgow suburb

30 June 2008

First council-run windfarm planned for Glasgow suburb A Glasgow suburb is set to be the home of Britain's first council-run windfarm, according to the Evening Times.

Cathkin Braes, which is situated on the edge of the Scottish city, will be home to the £15 million project, after being selected as the most desirable location in the region.

Plans for the five-turbine windfarm were revealed earlier in the year. It is thought that, when complete, all of the street lights in the city will be powered by wind-generated electricity.

The Castlemilk and Carmunnock Community Windpark Trust is set to team up with the council for the operation, with the local authority expected to foot the bill for the land.

It is thought the council will also pay for a trial wind turbine to be constructed on the site - a cost estimated to be £2.6 million - and would own and operate the windfarm.

Meanwhile, the trust is set to take a share of the saving the windfarm will contribute to power bills, which it will then invest back into the community.

The Scotsman reported earlier this month that energy minister Malcolm Wicks has asserted that wind power will be one of the main ways in which the UK addresses issues of climate change and energy security.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18662797-ADNFCR
