Organic waste proposal 'maximises renewable potential'

30 June 2008

Organic waste proposal 'maximises renewable potential' A new proposal designed to restrict the levels of organic waste being sent to landfill has been unveiled by a renewable energy consultation organisation.

The Renewable Energy Strategy Consultation is looking at ways of maximising the use of organic waste as a renewable fuel in order to help Britain to meet its target of 15 percent of total energy generated from renewable sources by 2020.

The new proposal sets targets for reducing the amount of organic waste typically sent to landfill and outlines methods of boosting provision of Waste Incineration Directive-compliant combustion capacity in order to allow the burning of wood waste alongside other biomass, Recycle.co.uk reports.

Renewable energy is set to play a key role in Britain improving its carbon footprint and reducing its impact on the environment, with prime minister Gordon Brown unveiling a new £100 billion 'green revolution' last week.

Launched by business, enterprise and regulatory reform secretary John Hutton, the Renewable Energy Strategy Consultation is seeking comments and suggestions on its plans to drive up use of renewable energy in the UK in order to combat climate change.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18662064-ADNFCR
