'Ambitious' hydropower plan for Scotland

30 June 2008

'Ambitious' hydropower plan for Scotland Hydroelectricity is set to expand in Scotland as part of an effort to achieve renewable energy generation targets, it has emerged.

The Guardian reported that The Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (FREDS) is expected to announce the expansion later this summer.

Scotland is currently aiming to generate 50 per cent of its energy through renewable means by 2020 and it is thought that hydropower is set to play an important role meeting this goal.

Currently, 12 per cent of Scotland's electricity is generated by around 70 hydroelectric dams - a figure which is set to increase in the coming years.

The British Hydropower Association reports that hydroelectricity is one of the most environmentally friendly and reliable renewable energy sources.

Glasgow University professor of water engineering, Alan Ervine, told the newspaper that the move toward hydropower could be beneficial to Scotland.

"It's something we know how to do; we can power it up and do it effectively in Scotland, compared to the risk-taking which is involved with wind, wave and tidal turbines," he stated.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18660591-ADNFCR
