The approval of two new windfarms in Scotland will help the country become "the green energy capital of Europe", energy minister Jim Mather has stated.According to the BBC, the newly-approved Areleoch windfarm near Barhill will be Scotland's fourth-largest windfarm when it is completed, with 60 turbines generating enough electricity to power 117,000 homes.Meanwhile, another newly-approved windfarm located at Mark Hill will feature 28 turbines and will have the capacity to power 41,000 homes with renewable electricity when it is completed.Calling the windfarm approvals "a significant step" for Scotland, Mr Mather added that the country is set to further expand on its national resources, using wind and tidal power to achieve its renewable energy targets in the coming years.Scotland's renewable energy targets aim to produce 31 percent of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2011, with half of all electricity generated through renewable means by 2020.
