Scotland's largest solar panel system completed

The roof of Glasgow's Sheriff court now boasts Scotland's largest solar panel generating system.

When all the necessary measures are in place, the court will provide approximately a fifth of the building's electricity.

Costing, £500,000, the solar panels cover 700 square feet of the roof and according to the Scottish government are rarely affected by the shade cast by surrounding buildings due to their unique positioning.

The solar panels will make a contribution to the government's target of reducing emission by 80 percent by 2050.

They were funded, in part, by a grant from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme and the government claims that the running costs will be low, after the initial installation expenses.

Speaking about the development, chief executive of the Scottish Court Service, Eleanor Emberson said: "We are planning further investment on building and energy management systems to significantly cut the court's energy consumption, which will mean the solar panels can contribute even more of our power requirements."

She added that the court also plans to cut energy consumption by installing a ground source heat pump.

Earlier this month, HSBC installed 422 solar panels on the roof of its Canary Wharf headquarters.
