The UK will be able to meet its renewable targets by 2020 through a series of radical policy changes, it has been claimed. The Renewables Advisory Board (RAB) has reported that Britain may be able to produce 14 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020 through accelerating grid studies, streamlined consenting processes and early introduction of revised support mechanisms, combined with strong political leadership. It states that the extra one per cent - in order to meet the 15 per cent target set out by the European Union - could also be achieved by either installing the Severn Barrage, providing an extra six gigawatts (GW) of wind power or increasing renewables energy production in the built environment sector.Alan Moore, co-chairman of the RAB, commented: "If the 15 per cent target is to be approached we need to establish a different energy world. "Many of these changes will need to be radical and will require, above all else, political leadership and a determination to succeed."The Crown Estate recently announced that zones for a further 25GW of windfarms will be tendered out to developers next year.
