World Environment Day calls for low carbon economy

05 June 2008

World Environment Day calls for low carbon economy The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched its World Environment Day today (June 5th).

This year's slogan for the event is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy, and the events aims to raise awareness of the ways in which countries, companies and communities can tackle climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Resources and initiatives that promote a low carbon lifestyle, such as improved energy efficiency, renewable energy resources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption will be highlighted by the events held all over the world.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon today calls on the world to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels in order to protect eco-systems and prevent environmental and political catastrophes.

"Mitigating climate change, eradicating poverty and promoting economic and political stability all demand the same solution: we must kick the carbon habit," he says.

World Environment Day was established in 1972 in order to mark the opening the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
