The government has been accused of hypocrisy by Friends of the Earth after business secretary John Hutton said that the UK should follow California's lead by investing heavily in renewable power.The environmental organisation has stated that the government's existing policies on renewable energy are insufficient and even seem to be aimed at derailing progress in this field.Mike Childs from Friends of the Earth said: "Government action to date has been woeful." He added: "We need less hot air and more action."Friends of the Earth has previously criticised the government for failing to change the Energy Bill to ensure businesses and households were offered long-term contracts guaranteeing a premium price for using renewable energy. Meanwhile, speaking to the Guardian this week, prime minister Gordon Brown said that a global strategy for addressing the impact of higher oil prices should be at the top of the economic agenda at the forthcoming G8 summit in Japan.
