A school in Wales has become one of the first in the principality to install solar panels, it has emerged.Tavernspite School in Pembrokeshire is benefiting from the Green Energy for Schools scheme that will see 100 schools provided with free solar panels courtesy of the government and the Co-operative Group. The panels will produce 3,000kWh of energy and will save two tonnes of CO2 every year. Pupils at the school are able to monitor the energy output of the panels as part of the education centre's ongoing environmental policy.Headteacher Kevin Phelps explained how the solar panels could help to generate money for the school."The aim is for long periods like summer holidays, when the children aren't here and the building isn't in use, that we're able to save the power and indeed sell it back," he said. The use of solar thermal energy in domestic properties is currently being promoted by Velux, which is campaigning to see the government fund the installation of such technology in newly-built homes.
