EU consumers 'should be better informed'

21 May 2008

EU consumers 'should be better informed' People in the European Union (EU) should be better informed of their impact on the environment, it has been claimed in a new report.

Better information about the carbon footprint of items bought by EU consumers should be provided in order to ensure that global temperature increases are kept below the EU target of two degrees C, according to Reuters.

Karl-Heinz Florenz, a German conservative representative, has called for maintaining warming levels at well below two degrees in order to prevent a high impact on individual lifestyles and society as a whole.

"Such initiatives should ideally be based on shared standards and should also take into account the embedded greenhouse gas emissions from imports," Mr Florenz said.

In related news, the WWF has this week called for a UK emissions standard similar to the one adopted in California, which stipulates a limit on the amount of CO2 that power stations are allowed to emit.
