Government 'needs to invest' in renewable resources

15 May 2008

Government 'needs to invest' in renewable resources The government has been recently criticised by both Shell and Centrica over its economic policy on the construction of renewable energy sources in the UK.

Friends of the Earth has now added its weight to the attack by claiming that "Britain's renewable energy performance is a national disgrace".

The organisation wants more to be done to promote micro-energy production and proposed that homes, businesses and local authorities should be able to sell back their excess production capacity to the national grid.

Nick Rau, Friends of the Earth's energy campaigner, said: "If the government is serious about tackling climate change it must provide incentives and greater support for energy companies to invest in projects such as offshore wind farms, where the UK could become a world leader."

In related news, petrochemical company Shell recently pulled out of a project to build a renewable energy project in the south-east of England, claiming that the US government was offering better incentives in the North American market.
