Government 'must do more to promote green travel'

More should be done by the government to promote greener travel options, a campaigner for Friends of the Earth told the Daily Express.

Tony Bosworth said that as the aviation industry represents one of the largest growth areas in terms of carbon emissions, more should be done to encourage environmentally-friendly alternatives.

"The government must do more to make greener travel options, such as long-distance rail travel, cheaper and easier to use," he said.

Mr Bosworth added that as rising fuel prices will make air travel a more costly option, travellers should investigate other transportation choices.

In other low carbon transport news, Glasgow drivers may soon face the prospect of a daily pollution charge to enter low-emission zones, the Evening Times newspaper reported.

This proposal has been applauded by Neil Greig of the IAM Motorist Trust, who claimed that although most cars with modern engines would not be affected, buses and lorries that emit high levels of pollution would be hardest hit.
