Greenpeace: Climate change issues important in London election

29 April 2008

Greenpeace: Climate change issues important in London election The winner of London's mayoral election will need to make climate change issues a priority in the coming years, according to Greenpeace.

Ben Steward, a spokesperson for the campaign group, stated that there are a number of climate-related items that should be on the mayor's agenda, including the third runway at Heathrow airport.

He added that "slashing transport emissions" will be another priority, as well as "trying to bring about a more decentralised energy system in London" that is less reliant on fossil fuels and high-carbon fuels.

The four main candidates have all made a number of environmental promises during their campaigns. Current mayor Ken Livingstone plans to introduce a £25 per day congestion charge on high-emission vehicles, while low-emission cars will be exempt.

Boris Johnson intends to take a zero-tolerance stance against littering and graffiti, as well as to improve recycling schemes and support the city's low emission zone, while Brian Paddick has promised to make London the greenest European capital city by cutting congestion, planting trees and enhancing recycling operations.

Finally, Sian Berry has promised to help the capital city reduce its carbon footprint, adding that carbon-conscious living could also help Londoners save money.

The election is set to take place on May 1st.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18571885-ADNFCR
