Domestic wind turbines could power 800,000 UK homes Small domestic wind turbines could provide the UK with 3.1 percent of its total electricity demand, it has been suggested.

According to the Guardian, a new report issued by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) argues that small-scale wind technology could power as many as 800,000 homes across the country.

The conclusion of the report is particularly striking given that previous studies have indicated that residential and community wind projects can fail to produce enough electricity to warrant their presence, the newspaper reported.

Figures produced by the EST indicated that while houses in built-up urban areas are not ideal candidates for wind power, there are 450,000 locations in the UK where turbines could justify their costs.

Simon Green, head of business development at the trust, was quoted by the Guardian as warning that retrofitting insulation wouldn't be enough to help the domestic sector reach its emissions reduction targets by 2020.

"You're going to have to invest in lower-carbon energy generation," he added.

The EST estimates that 40 percent of all the wind energy in Europe blows across the UK, making it a prime site for domestic, commercial and industrial-level wind power generation schemes.
