Should I buy solar thermal for my house? (3)
David Lockie (Admin) wrote:
I know that solar thermal is a cost-effective and low carbon solution to heating my house and hot water, but I'm concerned that most of the evacuated tubes (an important component in solar thermal systems most suited to the UK) are made in China and imported. Are the impacts of manufacturing and shipping processes involved going to outweigh the benefits of the renewable heat I will obtain, or is it still a positive net carbon outcome?

We installed Solar Thermal just over four years ago.
During that time the fuel bill for our oil fired heating has risen from £195 per 1,000 Litres to £515 per 1,000 Litres.
The economic ROI is looking better and better.
However, with regards to the CO2 savings, they remain a constant. Each year we save 260Kg of CO2 based on our annual reduction in oil use. Over the last 4 years we have saved 1,040Kg of CO2 and given that we expect to save a similar amount each year for the next 20 years, at least, I calculate that we will save 6,500Kg of CO2 during the life time of the system.
Does this saving exceed the manufacturing foot print? Honestly I don’t know, but hopefully the figures I have provided will enable someone more experienced in this arena to do the calculation for the rest of us.

We're looking at the gledhill total package (as we already have a thermal store) and are waiting to get a list of suppliers. SO no idea about price.

Strikes me that there are many potential solutions but few system integrators who can put it all together and make it easy for non-technical folks to buy.
