Should I buy photovoltaics for my home? (2)

I'd like to be more self-reliant in terms of energy for my family. I think that producing our own electricity will teach us the value of energy efficiency, and will help buffer us from future power cuts or energy crises. Photovoltaic panels are widely used on the continent for this purpose, and I've seen quite a few in the UK too. Does anyone know of any good case studies or have any personal experience? Is PV a good investment in the UK?

I hear so many conflicting viewpoints on this subject. Some people say that they provide energy security and help reduce carbon emissions, but other people say that they are not cost effective and that they can't manage to power much of a typical house's electrical requirements.
